22.03.2014 - Children living abroad – the opportunity to diminish your taxes

Tax deductions can make life easier, especially when we receive them due to having children. They can even zero the tax out. In order to obtain them, you need to insert in your tax declaration the tax numbers (Italian codice fiscale) of every of your children and/or any other dependent family members. Non EU citizens that request the tax deduction due to a dependent family member must provide a specific documentation that confirms the kinship. It can be one of the following:

  • original documentation provided by the consular office in the country of origin, translated in Italian and attested by a competent local prefect
  • documentation with an apostille [1] for citizens coming from the countries that signed the Hague Convention of October 5th 1961.
  • lawful documentation released by the country of origin, translated in Italian and certified as being a true copy to the original by an Italian consulate in the country of origin.

[1]Apostille (oroginated from the Latin “a post illa” - after those words) is a legal certification that guarantees on the international level the authenticity of any documentation and especially notarial acts.

The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, the Apostille convention, or the Apostille treaty is an international treaty drafted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. It specifies the modalities through which a document issued in one of the signatory countries can be certified for legal purposes in all the other signatory states.
